How do I import brushes into Procreate?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerIn Procreate, you can import brushes from files (like .brush or .brushset) by tapping the brush set, then the + button, and choosing Import. You can also drag and drop files into Procreate from the Files app.

Importing from Files or Cloud

First, download the brush file to your iPad—it might be in your Files app, iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or email. Open Procreate and go to the Brush Library (the brush icon at the top right).

Tap the + button in the top right corner of the Brush Library, then choose 'Import' from the menu. Navigate to the file and select it. The brush will appear in a new set named after the file.

Drag and Drop Method

You can also drag a brush file directly into Procreate. Open Procreate and the Files app side by side (using Split View or Slide Over). Drag the .brush or .brushset file into the Procreate canvas area.

A prompt will ask if you want to import the brush. Tap 'Import' and it will be added to your Brush Library. This method works well for single brushes or sets.

  • Ensure the file is .brush or .brushset (Procreate's native formats)
  • If it's a .zip, unzip it first in Files
  • After import, organize brushes into sets by tapping 'Brush Set' > 'New Set'
  • You can rename brushes by tapping them and selecting 'Rename'

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If the brush doesn't import, check that the file isn't corrupted and is the correct format. Some brushes are packaged as .abr (Photoshop) files, which Procreate cannot import directly—you'll need to convert them or find Procreate versions.

Also, make sure you have enough storage space on your iPad. If the brush set is large, it may take a moment to import. After importing, test the brush and adjust settings as needed.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to import .abr (Photoshop) brushes directly—Procreate doesn't support them natively.
  • Forgetting to unzip .zip files before importing; Procreate can't read zipped files.
  • Importing a brush set but not finding it because it was added to a new set at the bottom of the Brush Library.
